What to check next

Diagnostic guidance. Suggested checks and possible repairs are separate from the owner's reported results.

Have the oil level and maintenance history checked and arrange a cold-start inspection to locate the noise. Use the findings before deciding on internal engine work.

could be the engine warming up. Different metals expand at different rates when warming up, this can cause what you are hearing

sounds like sticky lifters. Not real sure if horizontialy opposed engines have lifters or tappets. But that sounds like lifter noise. Change your oil and filter.

strange clicking sound

The owner of a 1993 Subaru Legacy turbo reported a tapping or clicking sound from one side of the engine for a minute or two after a cold start.

Reported outcome: No identified source or completed repair was reported.

No recording, pressure reading or component inspection was supplied. The duration of the sound alone does not establish a lifter problem or normal operation.
