What to check next

Diagnostic guidance. Suggested checks and possible repairs are separate from the owner's reported results.

Have charging performance and cable voltage drops checked on the vehicle under load before replacing another component.

Check if the Engine is Well Grounded to the Frame or the Body, if he's not, it will affect the Alternator and result in not charging well and giving wrong information on the gauge in the car or maybe its the Regulator that has gone and that's the result why your Alternator work but he's not charging the battery ! Take a Look, maybe the Regulator is not inside your Alternator, its somewhere in the Engine Bay connected ! Check That !

my guess is that it's your alternator, even though you had it checked...take it to a mechanic and have it checked while the car is running.

I run older cars for many years. Everyone of them need ground wire attention after about 15 years. Make sure all three of your main ground wires are in good condition. Don't forget the heater motor.

 If any of these are not fully connected., you may receive all kinds of strange happenings: batteries that don't charge, lights that blow out prematurely, runs rough, fuses that don't last, even strange shorts here and there, popping sounds as the electricity finds its way out through whatever available source it can find, transmissions that don't shift right, car that dies every time you turn the heater on.

 Most makes and models have a ground on the block, on the transmission, and on the heater. Personally I put an extra ground from the starter to the body for good measure because the one on the block sometimes goes bad and cannot be easiely rerouted. This serves to replace the old ground wire on the block, secures my car against future aggravation, and gives me piece of mind that it will be running smoothly down the road.

 Hope this helps

Discussion summary

charging problems

The owner of a 1989 Corvette reported a charging problem despite a replacement battery and an alternator that passed an off-car test. Replies raised wiring, grounds and an in-vehicle alternator check.

Reported outcome: No in-vehicle test result or completed repair was reported.

The bench test and visual wiring check do not document circuit performance during the fault. Suggested regulator locations were not verified.
