2007 Chevy Impala

My windshield wipers stopped while driving in the rain. When I try to turn them on, I can hear the motor running however the wipers do not move. What could it possibly be?

there are 2 parts to the wiper system.
1: the wiper motor, and
2: the wiper transmission.
it sounds like the wiper transmission nut came loose from the wiper motor, that is if you can hear the motor running.
