I'm having issues when shifting into drive after backing up, the transmission will delay into going into drive and there would be a hard jerk forward after trying to accelerate (like it caught gear when i was pressing the gas). It started this about 15,000 miles ago and it's getting worse, specially in the cold. I now just backup slowly, wait 2 seconds, and shift into drive. I'm at a loss! Also, When slowing down to go around a corner and then giving it gas, it hunts for the right gear and does the same jerk. Would it help to change the transmission fluid and filter? I am trying avoid going to a transmission mechanic at all costs and would like to o-it-myself. Thanks.

I own a 06 Impala that had the same symptoms as you described, I am no grease monkey or anything, but if your ever owned a truck, it felt like when u-joints were worn when you went from reverse to drive. Some time my car would get to approx. 3000 rpms before engaging forward motion, from reverse.
I had the tranny flushed and the filter changed when I first noticed. Worked well for several hundred kilos, but it retured. I took it to a dealer,(no coverage over 168,000 klms). They noticed metal filings at the filter and proceeded to replace what I believe was the clutch plate(I'm somewhat ignorant on transmissions) . They showed me a plate and ball bearings and where they show be on the plate. Wear marks were obvious where these bearings were supposed to sit on the plate. It convinced me that my problem was solved. no reoccurance since, runs great, with smooth gear changes. done the trick for $1,700.00. Dealer labor costs killed me, but problem solved.
I am experiencing overheating problems with my car. Are you? If so, please advise.

I can say I am not having any over heating issues but, had an unrelated problem with the battery which burnt out... literally. The issues I am having with the transmission are very inconsistant. It happens every now and then but, most noticable from a cold start. Shudders on take off:" is my issue and looks to be the most common in these 4T64E transmissions. I will be doing a fluid and filter change myself, not a flush, and see what happens over there. Owner's manual states I don't need to change fluid until 100K miles under my schedule in use. So i believe it can't hurt to try. Hope the web site i provided helps.
