2005 Chevy Impala fuel guage not accurate

I just bought this car for my wife today, and noticed tonight that the fuel guage is all over the place. I put about $25 worth of fuel in it today, and it showed about 7/8th full, and tonight, it went above the full mark, and then again tonight it went way above the full mark. Do these guages have a history of not working properly?

most likely a faulty fuel level sensor. i couldn't find anything that related this issue as a common problem for the '05 Impala. there is technical service bulletin (TSB) or recall on the issue.
