2005 Chevy Impala do i need a new motor

noise is tapping i took to be valves,lifters
mechanic states is piston and that i
need a motor which he will get for $600
and $ 400 to put it in, is this reasonable
could it be something besides piston,
what happens if i
dont fix it

Hi there, Cracked piston skirts can sound like noisy lifters. if left alone the piston may fail and do some serious damage to th engine, but on the other hand they can be fine and just tap away, i would get a second opinion first, i would also be getting the lifters checked m any be do a flush with a good engine oil flushing compound, this will sometimes help with sticky noisy lifters.
