why do most repair shops do a transmission flush and not change the filter. Is the fiilter cleaned in this process and not need changing?

I don't know what you mean by most shops. At the shop I worked at we would drop the pan let it drain out change the filter which is inside and refill once back together. We didn't even do a flush unless the transmission had gone over its service interval and was having trouble. This is the normal way of doing a transmission service as I know it. The filter does not get cleaned during a flush.

Well first I've only been out of the loop for a year I don't think things have changed that much. Second dealerships love to do pointless service jobs they can charge for. You didn't trust the salesman at the dealership too did you? The mechanics at dealerships are some of the best trained you can find, but it probably wasn't a mechanic that recommended a flush rather than a full servise

salesman at dealership is my father,If your father sold you a new vehicle would you trust him. I cannot imagine a manufacturer not recommending the correct service, especially if they warrant the components for 100,000 miles. Looks to me like they would want the correct parts changed at recommende intervals.,if they had to be changed. To cover themselves.

Wow I stepped into that one. Yes I would trust your father if I were you. But the best place to get service interval advise is your owners manual. It should say when the filter and fluid should be changed. The point I was trying to make is not that they are recommending the wrong service, but maybe one you just don't need. I know for some vehicles the transmission filter and fluid is not recommended to be changed until 100,000 miles.

Glad I could help, and I was being hard on dealerships. Bad personal experience with them is no reason to hold it againced all dealerships.
