2003 Chevy Impala Change engine oil telltale

What could it mean when starting the car (very cold outside - in Michigan) the change engine oil telltale illumiinates for a few seconds, and then goes off? The car isn't ready for an oil change yet. I am using the sticker to know when to change the oil - every 3,000 miles.

Do you go off the mileage on a sticker, or do you use the oil life monitor to know when to change the oil?
