You need to start diagnosing this by having the codes read and then testing can begin. There are a many reasons for a CEL to come on. Don't disconnect the battery, don't start guessing. There are overides that will happen in some cases that will allow the engine to run close to normal because a default value is being used for example when a failure is coming from a particular sensor. Or there may be an evaproative problem that most often does not affect performance. The CEL is used to say that an emission problem is happening.
