2001 Chevy Impala wont shift into "O" drive

CHEV 3.8 stopped shifting into "O" drive. I was hit in the rear, no damage, and I don't know if this caused the problem. The fluid is fine and the tran has been serviced before. The tran shifts perfectly otherwize.

Has the check engine light come on?

The check engine light came on and went off after a few seconds but I don't remember if it was before or after I noticed it not shifting in "O" drive. The trans works perfect running in 3rd.position on shifter.

If the light may have come on after the fact, I would recommend having the computer scanned for trouble codes. There is a chance the answer is stored in the computer. Most parts stores will do it for free, so there is no money out of pocket for you. Do that and let me know what you find. It could be the converter or a sensor that is bad.
