2001 Chevy Impala Hesistation - drive

Intermittent - happens about every third or fourth time out in the car. When stopped and then pressing on gas pedal to go forward, car will not move for about 2-3 seconds, then the car suddenly lunges forward with a jerk. Used to happen most frequently when stopped on hill, but now it sometimes happens on flat surface, such as at a traffic light.

Does the engine rev up but the car does move? Or does it just sit there, then go? Is the check engine light on? If it is, have it scanned at Autozone, they do it for free and get back to me with the codes
