2001 Chevy Impala grinding air sound

i have the loud grinding sound coming from my air. once i turn it off my car runs very quietly. there is no noise if i turn the heat on, or just use the regualar "fan". the noise only comes once i depress the a//c/ button. thanks for your help.

sounds like the A/C compressor is going out, or the A/C clutch is bad.
