1978 Chevy Impala Speedometer not working

My speedo isnt working. The gas guage didnt work either so i replaced the speedo unit and now everything works except for the speedometer. The speed cable isnt broke. What could be the problem?

could be the plastic gear in the tranny.

unhook the cable at the tranny and use a drill to spin it.
have a friend watch the speedo.
