2003 Chevy Express brakes work and don't work

My van is an awd van, the brakes work 90% of the time, usually it acts up in the morning when I first start it up. Brakes work, then you push down on the brakes and there's nothing there, then all of a sudden they decide to work and you stop instantly, what could be the problem? Brake fluid is not low.

if you haven't had this checked out by now have it done so. You may have a master cylinder failing on you...
