I bought a used 2005 Equinox and was only given one key that opens the door and starts the car. I lost my key. I have been told by the dealership that I will have to bring the car in and pay around $400 to have new keys made because they are "programmed keys." However, I talked to a locksmith and they said they could make me a new key and program it for $135. Does a locksmith have the capability to do this correctly?

The locksmith would have to be subscribed to GM service programming, and have a Tech 2 scanner. The dealer is usually the only place to have this done. $400 is really high for this service. You might consider a different dealer. Any GM dealer should be able to do this for you. The keys usually run around $40 to $65 each. Only genuine GM keys are recommended. The cost of programming is usually around 1 hour of labor.
