2005 Chevy Equinox engines revs up at 40-50 mph

I start out driving and the car runs smooth/fine. Once I hit about 40- 50 mph sounds like the engine gets loud and starts racing. The sound goes away once I hit 60 mph.

I suspect the third gear in trans is not engaging properly and when you get to 60 it shifts to 4th or over drive.
