Your scan tool may not be compatible with your vehicle, try using a different style OBDII reader

I had the same problem and called the obd2 manufacturer, they said some cars are not compatible with the older model obd2 tools, it worked with another model at autozone, they do it for free, so now I use them for this car only instead of buying another tool

Hi-
My car has been idling (?Sp) a little rough for the last few weeks, but I was going to wait until I visited my folks in a couple of weeks to have the car checked by a mechanic because my dad's close friend is a mechanic and won't take advantage of me. Yesterday morning on my way to work (about a 7 mile drive) my check engine light came on. This morning, the car acted like it didn't want to start when I first turned the key over. And then, when it started, the check engine light came back on and even blinked at one point. The oil was changed less than a month ago and I've had the coolant level checked as well. The idling (again, ?Sp) seems a little worse earlier in the day. Everything else seems to be working fine and I've had essentially no problems at all from the car. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

If the light came on, that means the computer has picked up on an electrical problem with in the system. What I need you to do is this. Take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for codes. Most will do it for free. Have them write the trouble code numbers down on paper for you and let me know what they are.

NOTE: If they try to sell you something, wait until we speak again.

Joe

That is a check engine light. Take the vehicle to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan it for codes. Most will do it for free so there is no money out of pocket.

Let me know what you find.

Hi my 2005 Chevy Equinox broke down yesterday.
Here are the symptoms:
1) While driving the truck hiccups (i've been driving it this way for awhile)
2) The check engine light came on yesterday
3) The engine had no power could not get it to rev above 2000rpms
4) I shut the truck off to wait for towtruck and then tried to restart it but it would only
turn over then shut itself off immediately.
I really hope you can help me figure this out. Thanks :)

That's like diagnosing an illness over the phone. There are dozens of possibilities but GM does have a lot of trouble with their fuel pumps quitting while driving. That leaves you stranded on the side of the road. Chrysler pumps by comparison almost never do that. When they wear out they fail to start up but once they're running, they keep going. That leaves you stranded in your driveway or at work, at least not in the country on the side of the road in a puddle of tears. Both of those "pattern" failures are common enough that they are the places to start looking. Your mechanic will perform some diagnostic tests to determine if fuel pressure, spark, or some other cause led to the stalling.
