1978 Chevy El Camino 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

my wires have tore up and im tring to replace them...so far i have only taken the wires off. i noticed that the wires have a white thing around them and was wondering what the perpose of it was

I'm not sure what your describing but it might be an asbestos insulation to prevent the exhaust from burning it.
