Steering problem
2000 Chevy Corvette V8 Automatic 22000 miles

when I insert key and turn to on position, the steering locking mechanism won't release. Is this a computer/security issue, or is it in the steering collum?

This is a well known Corvette design flaw. I think there is a GM recall out for this. Call your local dealer to see if he will help you. If not, there is at least one company that sells a mechanism to defeat the function of the steering wheel lock in C5 Corvettes. If it ever releases, don't let it relock until you get mechanism defeated. Leave the key in the car and unhook your battery if necessary.

If you can't get it to unlock, you'll probably have to have it towed to the dealer. I understand that getting it to unlock once it stops working is a nasty process.

Good luck,
