1985 Chevy Corvette Coolant Temp

I have a 1985 corvette, when the car is in idle or at the stop light, the coolant temp rises and it gets up to around 280 degrees or so, but when im driving, it usually stays around 230 or 240 degrees. whats the cause for this?

Check the thermostat and the fan clutch or cooling fan if its turning on
