the car is losing coolant from an elbow that exits the firewall and makes a 90 degree turn down. it is made of rubber so I dont think a hose was connected to it. why is coolant pouring from there? is it anything to do with the heater core?

yes, that is the evaporator core condensation drain, if the heater core has a crack/leak, it will leak through the drain, your heater core is faulty
