I took my Colorado to the local Chevy Dealership, Service Center (where I purchased the truck) because the engine light came on and off for several days. It has been 1 1/2 days now and they advise they can not find the problem and were now checking the electrical. When they finish and can not find the problem, what am I obligated to pay for all this time?

Most dealerships will charge a one hour diagnostic fee. If they can see that the engine light is on, but can't isolate the problem; the proper thing to do would be waive the diagnosis fee until it can be isolated.
