When I come to a stop the rpm suddenly drops to about 5 and returns to normal

Does this car have a 2.2 or a 2.0 engine?
It sounds like the thottle body and/or the idle air control value could be getting dirty or gummed up.
You can try disconnecting the battery and touching the two terminals together while they are unhooked for about 15 seconds and see if the computer relearns the base idle....
