2005 Chevy Cobalt 4 cyl Automatic

I cannot get my driver side door to open, one day it was both drivers side and passenger side. I have to get in and out of the passenger side. What started happening first was I would get out and the latch would latch back down so I couldn’t close my door so I would have to lock and unlock my door multiple times with the remote until the latch goes up, once I do that and close the door it will then not open back up, like the latch is stuck down and will not come back up even though the door is "˜unlocked’. I have tried to lock and unlock it manually I’ve tried to lock and unlock it with my remote I’ve even tried rocking it thinking it probably just wasn’t in gear (it’s an automatic) but still no luck. I have to STILL get in and out of my cobalt through the passenger side due to the driver’s side latch not unlatching. Has anyone else had this problem or am I the only one? Also, what do you think it could be? I do not have a warranty on my car since it’s a 2005 obviously. It has locked me completely out at one point and I do not want to get to the point of it locking me in my car and me having to crawl through my window like Ace Ventura coming out of a mechanical rhino’s a$$. This is so FRUSTRATING since I have not seen ANY resolution on the internet on how to fix this without actually taking it to a dealership so they can "˜diagnose’ it which will be $50-55 its self. I have had more problems with this car than my parents have had with their 2002 Chevy Avalanche which has only had ONE problem the whole time they have owned it. My EPS System went out (had to replace that) my key kept sticking in my ignition (had to replace the shifter) and NOW my door locks are being all sorts of crazy. I have to live my luck with my car doors on hoping it will not lock me out even though the door locks are showing that its unlocked but the latches are not coming up. Anyone have an answer for that?

Have a question for you first.
Are your windows going up and down Ok?
I have seen the regulators going bad and bending the rods going to the door latch, or have you had them repaired recently?
And I have also seen the latches themselfs going bad also.
Let me know about the windows tho.

Yes, the windows are going up and down just fine. I have manual windows not electric like my locks. And no I have not had the regulators or door latch repaired. This is the first time it decided to actually lock the door latch down after I shut it. All I do is get out of my car shut the door (with out locking it) then try and get back in and it will not let me open the door. The latch on the top to show that the door is locked or unlocked is up so its unlocked but will not open.

It sounds like it could be 2 problems to me.
1. The door latch itself or door handle is defective and needs to be replaced. Or
2. Is it possible that someone tried to break into your car with a slim jim or some other similar device that slides down passed the window? Because a lot of times they wind up breaking the clips and pulling the rods off the door latch inside.

Either way, someone is going to have to remove the door panel and see what's going on inside the door.
Let me know how you make out with that.

I have this problem. More often in cold weather. I hate the issue but have little time to fix it. I open my window and use to out side handle to exit the drivers side. It seems if you pull lightly up and pull the handle 3 to 5 times quickly it opens.

It sounds like you may have an issue with the latch in the door also. But you may want to check the adjustment on the rods to the latch, they may be a little on the loose side and hence they get looser when they get cold. Let me know
