1993 Chevy Cheyenne slave clutch cylinder

I did the procedures for bleeding the slave cylinder and at the end i compressed the piston and attached the retaining strap. then the instructions tell me its ready to install. If I install the slave cylinder then i am unable to get the retaining strap off. Is the strap just suppose to stay on or am i missing something here. thanks
