1969 Chevy Chevelle column shifter linkage

everything is in place and the shifter seems to engage but no gears work. it worked for a minute in park drive and reverse but shifter got stuck and was forced back to park and then no gears worked. any ideas??

check for a broken motor mount on the lh side or both. If this is a floor shift, make sure to connect the ground wire from the engine to the firewall. And then check to see if your cable is melted for the shifter. That happened quite a bit.
