Engine Performance problem 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 169000 miles

How do I change the fuel filter on an 88 Celebrity Wagon? Recently changed the battery & car idles high when first started. Car drives fine but after it sits for 20-25 min. & I start it back up it begins to idle low & stalls when I come to a stop. Could this be a problem with the fuel system or even a dirty air filter? When changing battery, the air filter housing was bent. I bent it back into position the best I could, but wonder if car is not receiving proper air flow now. Thanks.

Hello, it depends on whether you have a carb or fuel injection. If you have a carb, the fuel supply line screws into the fuel filter housing at the carb.

If your fuel injected, the filter may be located driver-side rear. If you remove the driver-side rear tire, you can probably see it. Safely raise and support the vehicle.

I drew a line to the fuel filter housing. There should be a steel fuel line, the line nut screws into the end of the filter housing. You need a couple of wrenches, one for the fuel filter housing, the other for the line nut. The filter element is inside the fuel filter housing.

Is this for most of the 86 "A" body G.M.'S? Have an 86 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with the 2.8l (173 c.I.D) Carburetor V6. Used the firing order for the 86 celebrity after doing my plugs and wires. Thought the repair info might be interchangable

Chevrolet Celebrity 1986 2.8 liter Fuel Injected, 57,000 miles. One owner.
I've been having a problem with the engine cutting out, missing, on occasion. It doesn't do it all the time.
What I have done to correct it: I replaced spark plugs, AC Delco, distributor cap and rotor, sparkplug wires, fuel filter. I checked the fuel pump with a fuel pressure checker, checked out ok.
I pretty much just lived with the problem. I only drive the car about 15 miles, every day, weekdays.
Now, more recently, the "service engine soon" yellow indicator panel light comes on when engine is started, and stays on. Just been doing this for last few days.
Now here's the puzzlement, the engine runs fine now! No stalling or missing, no cutting out. Engine runs as smooth as it did a couple of years ago.
What should I do next? Is there a way to check the codes, ( this is a 1986 model ) like you can on the newer cars. IF so, where is the connector located, and, what is it called ( newer ones called OSBD2, I think)

You have the OBD 1 set up. With a jumper wire, jump A and B. Turn key on (don't start engine) and count the flashes from the check engine light. Each code is a 2 digit number. Let me know what you find.

Dunno if its a 4 or 6 cyl's See below

The fuel injection system uses an in-line filter. The filter is located under the vehicle to the left of the fuel tank. In-line filters use an O-ring where the fuel pipes screw into the fuel filter. If an element should ever become plugged, the engine will stop running. An engine failure caused by a plugged filter element may be preceded by a hesitation or sluggish operation.

OTHER FILTERS AND STRAINERS

A woven plastic filter is located on the lower end of the fuel pick-up pipe in the fuel tank. This filter prevents dirt from entering the fuel line and also stops water from entering the fuel system, unless the filter becomes completely submerged in water. This filter is self-cleaning and normally requires no maintenance. Fuel blockage at this point indicates that the fuel tank contains an abnormal amount of sediment or water. Therefore, the fuel tank should be removed and thoroughly cleaned and the tank filter replac

Mine is under the car on the drivers side behind the rear tire and before the gas tank. It has flare fittings on both sides. Pretty easy to install just make sure you have it sitting the right way one end should show tank and one line. Good luck

Engine Performance problem
1987 Chevy Celebrity 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

when the fuel is near but not quite emptytje car would act like it was out of gas. This sometimes happens when I park on a downhill slant, front end down. Or if I drove on a downhill grade. I would put a gallon of gas and the car would start. As long as I kept gas in the tank. No problem. However, last night I was driving on the freeway and I saw the fuel was low. I put 3 gallons in the tank and got on the freeway. 2 miles later the car conked as if it had no fuel. The fuel pump is working. I added more gas and it sounded like it got alittle fuel then stopped again. Where is the fuel filter and what is thje best way to change it? Help

My celebrity used to do that, too, whether or not I changed the fuel filter. It's under the car, on one side or the other, about halfway back. I think it requires a flare nut wrench on one end and hose clamp on the other.

If it is a carbureted engine, the fuel filter housing screws into the carb, fuel supply line screws into the filter housing. How long since a tune-up?
