My daughter has a 2004 Chevy Cavalier. The miles are about 50.000 and the engine is 2.2 liter I think. The heater works but when it is switched over to defroster, the air doesn't blow out the front window vents. It doesnt seem to be switching from one setting to another. Would we need to get a new heater/air conditioning switch unit?

The side window defroster comes out of the same housing as the front defroster. If you have air coming out of the front widow defroster then the two hoses going to the side windows may have come off. Behind the radio/heater control panel there are two plastic panels that have 2 bolts in each side and are bolted in the fire wall. The plastic panels under the heater controls have what looks like a seam in them. The 2 peices will come away from the fire wall when you take the 2 bolts off on each side. They can be pulled apart then. As soon as you remove them you will see the hoses, they look like small shopvac hoses and should slip onor off. If the front window deforster does not have air coming out of it, something may have fallen in the defroster vent which leads into the heater. If the floor heat works and the defroster does not, it is very likely that is what is wrong because the switch is a mechanical switch going to a cable and onto the cam on the side of the left top side of the heater. You can take the dash off and the bdamper will be visible then. The
