2004 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

when i switch the heater to defrost it will not go on.

Do you mean the fan doesn't work or the air doesn't blow through the defroster vent?

yes the defroster does not blow the air . it just comes through the dash vents.

it sounds like to me like the actuator for the venting isnt working correctly either isnt getting signal voltage from the heater control or is burnt out or shorted out
