What would make the blower motor work sometimes but not others? And why would the motor kick on delayed?

Most of the time that is caused by a bad blower motor or overheated plug connector in the wiring to it.
One thing you can try is wait for it to go out again and get a large screwdriver and holding it by the blade, rap on the motor with the handle. If that jump starts the motor, it is bad.
