2003 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Automatic

i bought this car used and the check engine light came on a week later. I took it to my mechanic and he ran a diagnostic and changed the thermostat. The check engine light came back on. He said the thermostat may be the wrong kind becuase the car runs at about 195. Do I need a dealer thermostat? Ive been watching the dash when I drive and the temp reading never even runs close to 195. Could my car be running too cold? What could cause that?

Actually, the factory t-stat would have been a 195 degree F. What code is he getting? There isn't a code for the thermostat. Also, he could have gotten a lower temp t-stat and it may not be allowing the engine to fully warm up.

Let me know.
