I read that a vaccum leak eas the cause of a stalling engine when the heater fan is turned on. Where would the leak be located?

Disconnect the a/c compressor connector and see if this happens anymore.
Is the check engine light on? If so any codes?
A vacuum leak can be found various ways. Listening for a hissing sound, using carb cleaner and spraying suspected areas while the motor is running, this will give an idle change.
