2002 Chevy Cavalier shifts

Hello,

Every time I accelerate from a stop it stays in 1st gear for 5-10 seconds then goes into second.

looking for tips to see what is creating this problem so that I do not get taken to the cleaners when i take it to a mechanic.

do you have a check engine light on? take it to you local parts store and see if they can scan it for you for trouble codes.
