My car idles and runs good .But At 3-4k rpm's it seams to sound like I could have a rod knock .If it is a rod knock .Will it still pass smog? And would the check engine light come on?And also what kind of test can i do to determine if my car does have a rod knock?THANKS.

does the car knock idling? If not, probably a spark knock.

I would also drain oil and then run a magnet through the used oil looking for any metal particles.

But as Jim mentioned, a rod would make noise all the time, getting worse as rpm increases.
