2000 Chevy Cavalier Transmission slips then works ok

Transmission problem
2000 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Automatic 167000 miles

When driving the transmission will work fine for a little while then starts to slip and wont do anything. I can cut the motor off and restart the car in a minute or two and it runs ok for a little while then starts slipping and then nothing. Is it due a complete overhaul?
