Engine Performance problem
2000 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic - miles

I have a 2.2 Cavalier and have noticed a problem with the idle. While in park the revs fluxuate, bouncing the needle, often spiking above 2000rpm. After warming the car up I put the car into drive and as I excellerated the rpm increased but I had little response. my car moved slowly forward untill i got to about 20km/h and it seemed to work fine. then i stopped at a red light and had the same problem. Any ideas?

no warning lights are showing, going for a system check today. hoping it might be covered in that. If not, what could the possible problems be?
