have a 2000 chevy cavalier, the gas gage does not work every once in a while. it reads empty, the car will not start even though the tank is nearly full.

Well is it out of gas when it want start? Don't mean that in a negative light. I am serious if your gauge doesn't work how do you know where your fuel level is at?
