I have a 1999 cavalier with a 2.2 liter engine front wheel drive. Currently the engine blows out black smoke, and really goes at it on hills. It has the error code number P0171 is on the check engine light. Currently I have replaced the, bank 1 and bank 2 o2 sensor with both bosche manufactured ones. IAT sensor, the map sensor, the coolant temperature sensor which has the car running some better. But still hesitates and stumbles while driving, and of course the black smoke.

Have you checked the convertor? Could be partially blocked. Check the spark plugs. Are they black? Does the engine have low vacuumn. This would be an indication of convertor problem. Let me know.

Just put a new converter on it yesterday at a garage. As far as the vacuum goes, I need to buy a vacuum checker. I hear no air leaks on it which doesn't mean much tho.

What about the EGR valve. Carefully unbolt it and inspect the pintle is it corroded, black soot. Carefully clean and check gasket on egr. Check vacuumn hose tht runs to egr. Process of elimation at this point.
