1999 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Automatic 159996 miles

my cavalier doesnt wanna start n if it does it turns off and sometimes backfires and when it warms up it stays on n sometimes runs good but sometimes wants to turn off sometimes doesnt wanna run and shuts off my friend checked the codes and tryed resetting it but the codes U1016 loss of class 2 comm with vcm / pcm stay can you please tell me what can I do or what needs to be done
