1998 Chevy Cavalier will not scan

2 scanners will not recognize the scanner connection to read code for check engine light, runs ruff cold. Check engine light went out when I disconnected bat. To replace belt tentioner. Came back on after 10 miles. Need to read codes to repair cold performance problem and hesitation off the line. It's a 2.4 Litre w/5 speed
