1998 Chevy Cavalier Stuck in high gear

Transmission problem
1998 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

The transmission is stuck in high gear even when shifting through the gears manually. Are there basic things to check through first before giving up?

Honestly it doesnt sound good.Check fluid level first.If check engine light is on, you can have the PCM scanned to see if it stored any trans related codes.
