Air Conditioning problem
1997 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 101K miles

I had my compressor (along with other required components) replaced last October. It has worked great until about a week ago. It's doing the same exact thing as before. I believe the compressor has locked up. I go to turn my car on (ac off) and it makes this terrible screeching noise. If I try to turn the a/c on, it shuts my car off completely.
My compressor and clutch is still under warranty so I can swap my old one out for a new one free of charge. My question is: Can I get my bad compressor taken out and then take it up to the shop to swap it out without harming my car (can I drive it without a compressor)? Last time I had to switch it out, I bought all the parts necessary first and afterwards, took the old parts back to get the money back. In this case, I don't have the money to buy the new compressor.
ALSO, if you don't think its the compressor, what else could it possibly be?

Any info/help would be GREATLY appreciated. My windows don't roll down either and I live in South TX so I am absolutely miserable.
I'm not sure if any other info is needed but here may be some stuff:
The compressor was bough tin October 2007. It Is a NEW (not Re-man) Delphi compressor w/clutch
The engine is a 2.4L
I had the orifice and accumulator replaced and the system was flushed. I may have had the condenser and other parts replaced as well but am not positive.

THANKS
Kristi

Was the system properly oiled? Several things can take out a compressor but lack of oiling is top of the list. As far as driving the belt that is turning AC turns everything else.
And if this compressor is locked up then the same items will need to be replaced as before.
