Engine Cooling problem
1997 Chevy Cavalier Front Wheel Drive Automatic 87000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
My cooling fan only works when my A/C is on. The temperature gauge works fine, but the fan does not come on if the temperature gets on the high side (without the A/C on), which occurs if I am in "Stop and go" traffic. I know that there is a temperature sensor that mounts on the the engine. Is thiis the same sensor that feeds the temeprature gauge on the dashboard ? If it is, then what else could be causing my cooling fan not to come on based on enginer temperature ?

the best way to check it is get a scan tool and when the engine warms up, see if the fan request is on in the data stream. if it is , check and see if the PCM is sending a signal out to the fan relay. You can also check the relay and see if you can jump it to see if the fan works or not.
