1997 Chevy Cavalier Automatic 183000 miles

Hi, we are looking to purchase this car for my son to get around in. The seller says the check engine light is on for catalyst effeciency code and after investigation he found it was the catalytic converter. He said he has the converter and it just needs to be installed.

The purchase price is $900. My question is: how much will it cost to install the converter and how can I be sure that's what's wrong with it? We desperately need the extra car and my husbands been laid off since October, so I don't want to get into something that's going to be costly to repair. The guy said the car runs like new...

Thank You!! We are going to look at it today

Installation depends on if convertor is welded or bolted.

Convertors generally fail because of an incorrect air/fuel ratio or an impact with an object (like a curb or large rock).
So if air/fuel ratio was original problem and has not been corrected, new convertor will fail also.

I understand your problem, but a used car is sold "as is" unless seller provides a written warranty.

The best advice I can give is to have car inspected before you buy by a trusted garage.
