Hello, I am having some issues with my car. I have gotten a tune up and replaced all the necessary parts. I have gotten and oil change, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, new spark plugs and wires. The problem is this. I will be traveling at any speed but normally going about 20-25 mph and when I try to accelerate above say 20 the car holds back but yet the motor doesn't change in sound or increase in speed. Then all of a sudden the car will jump about 5 or more mph. And make a loud thumping kind of noise. I have gotten advice to up the gas to a higher octane. It fixed if for about 2 weeks then I started again. I was told to get a tune up and a fuel filter could really help. I have done that and it helped but a week later it started up again. Then told to go to another octane higher and try a fuel system cleaner. Worked for about a week. Then it started back up again. The only thing I know is left is the fuel pump or the distributor cap. Can you help diagnose this problem? Thank you.

I would start by checking fuel pressure. Here is a how to:

Now I have some other questions. First, has the check engine light ever come on? Next, the thumping noise you described could be a broken motor mount or trans mount. Have they been checked? Finally, when you hit the gas, do the engine's RPM's increase but the car doesn't?

Let me know.

Yes the check engine light is on. But the light is always on when my car is running. It was tested and I was told its a bad sensor and it never shuts off; even after when mechanical work is done or its been reset it still turns back on. Secondly I have yet to test the fuel pressure but I will do that next. Third, when I hit the gas nothing increases, the car doesn't make any noise its just silent. Nothing changes, and the car doesn't move any RPM'S. The thumping noise sounds as if the noise is coming from the sway bar bushings or from the suspension.

Start with the fuel pressure. As far as the thumping, check ball joints. They can cause that type of problem. While you are there, check all steering components and struts and coil springs.
