1996 Chevy Cavalier Slow shift out of first

My transmission shifts slow out of first gear but once out of first gear it shifts into the other gears fine. It has a slow take off then once it shifts into the second gear it takes off fine.

Yes the engine light is on. I know the engine has been rebuilt. I don't know the actual mileage.
