Check the detent or "kickdown" cable from throttle body to trans, it may have broken.

It is also called "TV" throttle valve cable.

The kickdown cable is fine. The car can shift from P-R-N-D-2-1 its just wont shift the gears in Drive. But the only way I can get the speed up past 35 is by useing passing gear but even with that it max out at about 49mph. Could it b a sensor of some sort and if so how can I cheack it and see?

I would start (if TV cable is OK) by changing the trans fluid and filter, look for any metal particles in drained fluid.

Could also be govenor, pump, torque convertor.
