one of the fuel injectors on the cavilier is spraying gas all over the engine ...would this cause the car to die and not start?

Yes.
The injector has come dislodged from fuel rail. Remove fuel rail and replace the Orings on each injector. Use a dab of grease one the Orings to make reassembly easier.
Most injectors are held to fuel rail with a small clip, you may need new clips.
