How long and how hard is it to install a thermostat and would that be the problem of it overheating and running hot so much. Also when I turn on my heater it starts to run hot.

Yes a thermostat is most likely the cause of a overheating problem, and it is the cheapest thign to fix also! Change it and hope for the best.
