Hello,
I have a 1989 Cavalier Z24. Temperature gauge will read high anywhere between 220 & 240 or stay at 240 mark, fan does come on and stays on while driving at this temp. Car never ran this hot before. Temp would read I guess around 190 - 200 always below the 220 mark on the gauge. The only time the car temp gauge would sit on 220 mark (and fan would also come on) was while stopped in traffic. As soon as I started to drive again, the temp gauge would then drop down below the 220 mark. I just had the antifreeze changed, but did not backflush the system as I am afraid that would cause a problem in my 89. I have always maintained the car both mechanically and physical appearance. I do not remember ever having the thermostat replaced. Would you suggest to change the thermostat as a possible solution to this problem ? Should the radiator be flushed ? What is your repair advise concerning this temp running too hot problem. I love my car and greatly appreciate your expertise and feedback. Thanks very much, Irene
